Car Insurance and Your Young Driver

By

It’s likely that you are the parents of teenagers you know already that communicating with your teenager is already a challenge. It’s also quite likely that the challenge of communicating to your teenager about driving a car in the cost of car insurance for young drivers will be more difficult, but necessary.

There is a reason why young drivers car insurance premiums are high priced. Car insurance companies base premiums on many factors, however, primarily the risk involved with the insured is the main reason. Teenagers who drive automobiles are a high risk. That has been proven over time, and that is statistically proven every year.

Your young driver needs to understand that driving is a privilege not a right. For many young drivers driving an automobile becomes an introduction into living as an adult. Teenage drivers are held to the same standard as adults, and traffic courts will not hesitate to suspend or revoke a drivers license if there are too many violations received in a short period of time.

Additionally, since teenage drivers are minors, their parents may be held liable in many cases for the violations that the teenage driver commits. It is important from the beginning of a young drivers driving experience that he or she understands the responsibility that goes with driving a car.

As stated, young drivers car insurance is expensive. Insurance rates for young drivers start out high and will only go higher if they begin to accumulate traffic violations. Simply put car insurance companies make money by not paying claims. Young drivers threaten the profitability of car insurance companies and the insurance premiums in many cases become cost prohibitive.

Educating your teenager on his or her responsibilities about driving an automobile is imperative. Typically teenagers are fearless when driving an automobile and think they know everything there is to know to begin with. That’s part of being a teenage driver. Unfortunately, as you know this is not the case. It is your job as a parent to reduce the risk in your young driver, and eventually you will pay lower premiums.

There are a number of things that you can do to reduce the cost of young driver insurance. If your child is a good student most major car insurance companies will offer a good student discount. Raising your deductible helps with any insurance premium, especially those of a young driver.

Choose a vehicle that is not a sports car or an SUV, and is equipped with as many safety features as possible. It is not likely that your teenage driver will want to drive a traditional sedan. It is quite likely that they have had dreams of driving a sports car or SUV. If you choose one of these options be prepared to pay premiums for car insurance in the thousands of dollars per year.

As your child grows and matures as a driver, provided they do not speculate moving violations the insurance premiums will begin to lower. Typically this occurs after three years of driving. Until that point you must encourage your young driver to be smart, be safe, and drive defensively.
